If you are mainly just recording yourself rather than running a commercial studio and regularly tracking bands inc. drums etc. and are likely to be transferring files into a DAW for editing regardless, then I think the case for paying the premium for a RADAR system is less compelling. However if you would like to experiment with a standalone multitrack recorder (no computer involved) with an analog console to get a feel for things, then I would still consider a stock Alesis HD24XR (non modified with no additional computer interface) and see how it works for you. That way you are only out of pocket for the Alesis which you can resell and recoup your outlay if you decide to go in a different direction. I'm kinda leery about anything Alesis for build quality, reliability, and support reasons. Iz's reputation for support is unrivaled.

Do the old Radar 24 have a loud fan that require an iso box ? I found it an issue on the 24 only with quiet overdubs or hushed singer/songwriter types. It was part of my decision to upgrade to a newer Studio unit. MUCH quieter. Lanois and Howard are doing rock-and-roll. Not-an-issue. If you call Emmylou Harris "rock and roll"....

so, the guy with probably the apogee mki 16x16 module, (he is suggesting its a mkii but in his pics I only see a mki chassis), seems to refuse to ship it, wants me to do like a 12 hour return drive and wants cash, i.e., I walk in to some place I don't know with 2 grand in my pocket to pick up a card that he says is working but that I can't test. I would buy it with paypal as then it is insured and I am protected. He has a bunch of high end gear for sale maybe its all legit but,, Thoughts ? Radar.

Someone said earlier in the thread that RADAR boxes are just Windows 8.1 Workstations.... Not "just Win 8.1 workstations", which would imply just a run of the mill box. They're optimized for the task of recording. Windows was added as a relatively recent feature, due to popular demand. IZ was forced to turn to windows when the operating system they used became obsolete approx 10 years ago.

I'm kinda leery about anything Alesis for build quality, reliability, and support reasons. Iz's reputation for support is unrivaled. Normally so would I but the Alesis HD24XR gained a reputation for sounding great, being generally reliable and inexpensive. One could say it punches a long way above its weight. Even on that 'other' forum it is universally liked. I'm yet to see one post from anyone who has actually used one (the 'XR' version) saying they didn't like its audio quality. The only negative comments tend to be from those who have never heard one based on the preconceived view that it must suck because it's Alesis. Come to think of it maybe I should stick some Studer labels over the top of the Alesis labels? EDIT: I'm not saying I would never want a RADAR in fact if I was to look at any other system a RADAR would be on the top of my list.

With the apogee 16x16 card he has confirmed it is a mki and will ship if I get him paid.
I really like the idea of both an alesis xr and a radar system but right now the apogee card is reasonable and 6 months old.
With either the alesis or the radar I need to also do something about monitoring and I really like the DAC on the symphony mkii and the mki module drops in the mkii chassis and is plug and play: 2-4 of db24 to trs cables and bob's your uncle !?
The radar in Montreal is appealing but a fair bit more money ?

When I had the RADAR 24, I used my two Lynx AES16e cards in my MacPro for interfacing into the RADAR's converters for mixing/ODs. My RADAR 24 had an AES/EBU 24ch I/O card though.

no, its just about comparable costs and my financial situation. Personally, I lean towards buying the used apogee 6x16 card but the guy is such a dufus he refuse to use paypal so he wants someone to buy a used card cash and take all the risk. How do I actually know the card works other than his word ? A new mkii 16x16 alone is worth more than the alesis option (4x) and roughly 3 of the radar systems that are currently available. are less money. The delta allows me to think about mixing with up to 24 live channels, if I want, so I am thinking about it. and its implications. Personally, I know wiz just goes out to the eq and back in the box to mix, works for me! I have a plan re: used card. I won't go into it here . Cost is a factor here too, if I can get the radar 24 with the cards for less than say $500 out of pocket after trading my octo and plugs vs at least $2,000 cash for the used 16x16, that is a factor too. If the radar knocks my socks off, then it raises the possibility of selling my symph mkii and freeing up around $2,000 or more USD. I am approaching retirement so I want to have a system in place that is working for me: the delta is a bit of an experiment, but the options listed above are all real and available now or do nothing and just use my 8x8 and 8200.

If you buy a used RADAR for it's ( very good ) converters, you're getting an excellent hard disk recorder, with competent editing features, for free.
IIRC, Jim Williams does a mod for the first generation Alesis HDR which significantly improves the converters. It is also a decent recorder but I can't speak to any support for it.

I know about Jim's mod and I am sure its worth the money, the problem is total cost: a good used alesis is around $900 usd, his mods are I believe another $700 USD, plus exchange, shipping duties and taxes. Plus you need 3 adat inputs on your interface to pass 24 channels to your daw, so another interfaces too ? So, total possible cost gets you into the radar 24 price range and more than the used apogee 16x16 card,( its in Canada pay with Cdn $, no duties etc.) Also, at that point you are within spitting distance of a couple of the radar 24s. That is why I am mulling this all over If radar24, local guy, had said yes to straight trade I would probably say yes, but as his price increases, then it just easier for me to get the used apogee card; plug and play

Jim only does mods to the Alesis HD24XR which was the later version fitted with the upgraded converters made by AKM. The XR is the second generation. He won't mod the non XR first generation Alesis HD24.

What is it that Cobb shot out with his Nyquist RADAR and replaced it with again.....ehm? RADAR is a great tape deck replacement for a traditional studio. If you want to do modern "fake reality" editing in a DAW, why bother? It's a system that's bullet proof to boot and serve as editable deck. You're saying that there aren't other lovely sounding ADA options in 2017 made for DAWs?

Well, there's the bulletproof reliability and the over the top tech support, even for older machines that most other companies would have have dropped support on long ago - unless that company happened to be Avid, who would not only have dropped support but also tried to force you into an expensive hardware "upgrade" that you probably don't need.

For years AVID did everything they could to try and sell turkey systems so they could achieve the same bulletproof rep, it worked in video but Audio guys have always felt like they were smarter than the Manufacturer! IZ support has always been about what they know works not what might work, it can seam expensive but how many RADAR problems do you see?

Radar, I've owned 5 at one time, (48 tracks in 2 rooms & a remote 24 track system) Still own three. Turn it on, arm the tracks and your ready to go. Audio nirvana, and it will work every damn day!
I have one of the new Studio systems, loaded with PT, DP, & Harrison Mix bus, installed, personally 2 years later still wondering, why I bought that??? I was fine with the last version Radar 6. And I bought Radar cause it WASN'T a DAW. Stil have two of the 6 models, and I use them every day. AMAZING PRODUCT.
