Maybe I am just a little slow but I always associate Radar with protools but I saw a reference to be able to use it with other daws. So, how does that work ?
Also, I get confused by the different Radar systems: what are they and again, am I just being slow. ?

Radar Studio runs a OEM version of Windows 8.1, while booted in workstation mode - it can run any DAW that supports ASIO drivers

You can network them together to transfer files. Not sure what you mean.

Ah, the Radar is ruining windows but the mac is running apple OS ? So, it doesn't matter, as they are independent but can share digital information ?

Yes, your Mac is running Mac OS. The Radar and any Computer -- can be networked with Gigabit Ethernet of the Radar, or even transfer with the Iz Corp SSD Hard drive that comes with USB functionality. I use to use a Radar with a Mac Pro and I loved using the Ethernet Drop to transfer Radar Multi-track BWAV files over the Mac. Very simple and effortless. I hope this answers your question.

Yup perfect: thx !
So you record to the radar hardisk(s) and then transfer to other disc for backup and storage ?
What did you use for monitoring/headphones: a separate monitor controller ?

Yes, like a tape recorder, perhaps. But much better. If you are using Radar in Radar Mode, you need an Analog Mixer. There is no mixing. So yea, you need separate analog mixing and headphone amplifiers. If you are using Radar in Workstation mode with a DAW, you probably could get by with a simple monitor controller.

Here's what I do:
Mic-Pre outs (optionally into Comps/EQs)- then into RADAR INputs. Radar OUTputs to my A&H ZED428 for monitoring during tracking in RADAR mode.
For mixing/ or serious editing, I copy the BWAV files over into Protools in the Workstation Mode (Win8.1). Hybirid mix out stemming to drum buss, perc buss, agtrs buss, egtrs buss, keys buss, fx buss, vox buss and then I record either to a Korg MR2000S or back to tracks 23&24 of the RADAR. Works great!

What about an Alesis HD24XR? Sometimes referred to as the "poor man's Radar". Either use it as a stand-alone recorder with its internal hard drive or as an AD/DA via ADAT. The XR versions sound great and are cheap for 24 tracks. They can be easily adapted to use SSD's.

It was an IDE to Firewire 400 adaptor which enabled transfer of files (Alesis FST) from the HD24 drive to a computer. You removed the drive caddy from the Alesis, plugged it into the Fireport and then connected the Fireport to your computer. However Alesis eventually ceased software support. A developer has since created HD24 Tools which is available free. ringbreak.dnd.utwente.nl/~mrjb/hd24tools/The Alesis Fireport adaptors are somewhat hard to find and are limited to Firewire (no USB) but there are other hard drive adapters that should work with HD24 Tools. If contemplating recording to the internal HDD then it's definately worthwhile picking up some SATA to IDE caddies and fitting an SSD. The other option is to use an ADAT to USB or FW interface and record directly into your DAW using the Alesis as an AD/DA. The HD24(XR) can operate as an AD/DA without any hard drives fitted. For more info there's the Alesis HD24 Yahoo Group here... groups.yahoo.com/group/hd24/No doubt a RADAR would be super duper but if you don't have the budget and are keen to dip your feet in some more old school analog console style multitracking then something like an HD24XR will give you a taste without breaking the bank. We like ours... both of them!

The RADAR Studio is their newest version and is the one that can switch between RADAR mode and DAW Mode. Expensive, but very very nice. Version before the Studio was RADAR 5 and before that RADAR 24. They really are wonderful machines.

I understand the iz company has a very good rep for standing behind them and servicing even the older machines ?

I use my older 24/V as both a standalone machine and an interface via ADAT I/O, While support and upgrades are not cheap IZ is easy to work with. A Newer machine is about the only upgrade path I would consider at this point!

Also, I get confused by the different Radar systems: what are they and again, am I just being slow. ? As stated before, with the radar Studio, no need to transfer between machines, it's all in the one box - boot up in RADAR mode or in DAW mode and use pro tools or other daw. For the older radars, you'd have your machines on a network and you could transfer files from the radar archive drive to your separate daw based machine. HOWEVER - if you wanted to use the daw timeline to mix live, you could send out via lighpipe into the RADAR (adat cards) and let the RADAR be the D/A while you used your glorious analog gear. I used to do this using an RME digiface 24 I/O of light pipe coming from the daw machine. I still have that sitting around, but gave the studio now so don't need it.

What concerns would peeps have with older radar machines, i.e.,hat breaks on them or requires servicing ? I've owned my RADAR 24 now for about ten years. The only thing I had to repair once was to replace the power supply, which IZ sent me out immediately. I did send the machine back to them at one point to have AES/EBU Cards installed as well as changing out the AD/DA cards to Ultra-nyquist. Turnaround time was very quick. At that time, it had to go back to Canada, but now they have service centers here in the USA. Interestingly, I just got an email from IZ this morning. The new machines are available with Thunderbolt and Windows 10.

What concerns would peeps have with older radar machines, i.e.,hat breaks on them or requires servicing ? After 10 years of use, my RADAR 24 motherboard needed a new bios battery, I got one from CVS Pharmacy. When I got the RADAR Studio, 2 of my now decade+ old RADAR classic cards went into it and I kept rolling. I gave my RADAR 24 with one card in it to my friend and he's been using it since; IZ has continued to support him.
