So far I've never felt the need for any cloud filter type device, and I'm still quite skeptical of the measurements panning out any better. I run the Samar into anything from modern transformerless to 1930's RCA, and I never add treble.

I'm with emrr on this the mf 65 Samar has never needed added treble It has a very very very nice too end . I've used it to recored an entire album every instrument this wont work on every cd but the Samar gets used every session somewhere

The r84 sounded fantastic with the AEA pre and some top added with the eq. Lots of different ways to skin the cat. I keep sayin there is not a best ! Just what works for you!

I'm glad to know that Samar is a versatile microphone because it's just what I'm looking for... I'm almost convinced to buy VL37a, I'd like to hear some audio recording but can not find much about it....

R84 is great a foot back from a Silverface. Has a lot more personality than a Royer.
In any case, I like ribbons that blend well with a condenser.

Unless the 37a is the same price as the 37, in which case it is the deal of the century.

I've been thinking about a Samar VL37.
What's a real world timeframe for getting one? I emailed Marik once about having him do a mod and I didn't hear back for weeks : )

the price of Samar VL37A is US $ 999.00, I wrote an email asking for some information on the timing but I have not yet received a response...from what I read it takes 60 days...that makes me a little rethink...

Well i took the plunge and bought an R84. Just waiting for it to arrive. Wonder how it compares to the Stager Sr-2N? Looks like 2 x nice toys i am waiting for to arrive. It will be interesting to see how different they might sound on vocals and acoustic guitar.

It will be interesting to see how different they might sound on vocals and acoustic guitar. A lot of mics sound good in any preamp. The R84 is not one of those microphones. If can take the plunge, get the AEA preamp... the RPQ one, with equalization tailored for ribbon microphones and enough gain to use them even on classical guitar. Or, you can get a Grace M101 and use ribbon mode, which can work quite well. Dark preamps are definitely not kind to any ribbon mic, but especially the R84

I have a grace 201 so i was hoping that would be a great match with possible the cathederal pipe durham booster as it has an impedance booster in it as well if i read it right

I like MXL ribbons, LOL. I am hoping Svart's comment on the first page is true. The Royer R121 has struck me as special though every time I've seen it in shootouts. Warren Huart just did a good one that included both the R84 and the R121 back to back, worth a watch if you're in the market.

Well i saw that warren hurt video and really enjoyed it. I got a chance to test out the r84 and it has a huge proximity effect when you are close to it. The sound It just enveloped all around yout was pretty special as a vocal mic. So i pulled out the stager 2 series andit has the sameeffect up close but not as big and i was pleasantly surprised with quite a noticeable bit more high mids that really sounded better for vocals. Pull both mics away andallthay bass rolls off and then i cansee why you need a good treated room to work with these mics. But yes the Stager is a keeper.

I got a chance to test out the r84 and it has a huge proximity effect when you are close to it. That's the hardest thing about the R84. Staying exactly 13.179" away from it, aiming the sound source directly at the middle of the ribbon... at that one simple unforgiving sweetspot.

I use an AEA R88 with a RPQ preamp for overheads 95% of the time. I'm not in love with the sound of snare through it, a little too much low mid bonk a lot of the times but I like imaging and how cymbals sound through it. The RPQ is a nice match, it has a shelf EQ that works really great when you need to brighten it up. My drum tracking space isn't ideal, it sounds good for slower moody stuff but if you are hitting hard the room really compresses. I'd like to try it in a larger space sometime. I need to do some more experimenting with placement...height and all that.

Here's an example where it's the primarily sound of the drums on a track:

Here's an example where it's the primarily sound of the drums on a track: Great example of when the r84 kills it. They get a big and soft drum sound that isn't too dark. Busier tracks tend to mask the drums for me with an 84 and something in the vein of a u67 or other large sounding tube LDC seems to be better for that. But when you let the track breathe, that's a gorgeous sound.

I was going to start a new thread but I'll just post this here. I used my r84 on sleigh bells ($30 Meinl) yesterday and the sound, to me, is glorious. Kind of a dark preamp as well. The Sebatron Axis 200VU with NOS Mullards that are fairly dark compared to the stock JJs. No EQ or comp. Just the R84 1.5 ft away from the bells on axis. app.box.com/s/y4b03nx6jhvra2zb12huhse6g1i1enup

Has anyone used an R88 on drum overs? this is my favorite single point Stereo Ribbon for overheads, its magical, dry and large, round and real. Super sweet air and phatness Right now, Im really enjoying the 44 in mono, but saving pennies for the R88 mk2
