Any of the Foote Control Systems stuff...except the model that's made for color.

The Foote stuff is really, really great. I scored a deal on a P4DMS with Carnhill iron and it's been fantastic. That said, the JW modded Aphex is no slouch. I A/B'd the two, and they were strikingly similar.

CAPI FC526 is supposed to be pretty transparent, right?

JW Modded Aphex Compellor like nothing else ! Hey Eric, I thought the compellor was more suited for bus compression and not tracking, no? I just got a Aphex 651, scored it for $200, and damn that thing really is nice! I'm super impressed so far and I'm looking to maybe get a compellor too now, but I don't have any experience with them. How does it compare to the 651? John - Try the Aphex 651, super clean, capable of heavy compression with little to no sound, low noise and overall very easy to use. Easy to find under $300 on ebay. Highly worth it IMHO. Better than the vca DBX comps, better than a RNC too. Again, just my experience. Only owned it a week but I'm feeling like I really scored.

651 or better yet, the 661. Super clean. If you really want even cleaner, have Williams mod it.

526 is colored by the opamps in them...transparent gain reduction.

The Compeller can do levelling, compression and peak limiting simultaneously and is extremely transparent rather than a mojo device.
It is more suited to bus compression than the Expressors but it's also great for controlling acoustic guitars without causing pumping or dulling and works as a very transparent vocal compressor.
The Compellor is the best gain control device I know of for preserving the naturalness of acoustic instruments.
The Expressors are better suited to individual instruments and work great for transparently reigning in peaks when set to a moderately fast attack, fast release and high threshold at around 4:1 up to 10:1.

I use two Safe Sound Audio P1. The compression is super clean and crisp. The company is no longer around but you can pick up these excellent, clean channel strips for less than half their retail price. Also look for the Dynamics Toolbox by the same company.
See the TapeOp review of the P1 and the Dynamic Toolbox -- Andy Hong loves his.

Doesn’t Jim also mod Ashley comps and aren’t they very clean too: maybe I’m remembering that incorrectly ?

Serpent SB4001 is pretty clean sounding, but can also get pretty gritty!

I've got both a 651 Expressor and Pico 502 that I'm looking to sell if you're interested (since others mentioned both).

I've got both a 651 Expressor and Pico 502 that I'm looking to sell if you're interested (since others mentioned both). Both of these when Modded can be really really clean. I have both and have modded the crap out of both. The Pico is really great at low ratios and RMS basic compression and fits in the 500 rack. The Aphex is extremely flexible. Probably more flexibility then the distressor but a hair more complicated to setup but still really easy. They do have auto mods that I almost never use because I find I can usually dial in a more accurate setting then using just the slow or fast auto mods. I like to use both in series with other comps usually. I also have the CAPI comps. Those are actually on the cleaner side of things even with the Discrete op amps. Johnkenn what is your main use for the comp you are looking for? That might help a little more in suggesting one comp over another.

The 651 or 661 is a bit of a no brainer for the price. There's is an internal jumper on the 661 if you want to bypass the "tube essence" circuit. I had a pair modded by Jim Williams, sold them years ago because of money
If you want something a little less complicated the Brute and Vac Rac are great. Pretty hard to make sound bad.
