Someone sent me a Zip file that I need to unzip. I don't feel like paying $30 for WinZip. Is there a free or inexpensive app for a mac to open Zip files?
I found a few., but I've had some bad experiences with malware when downloading things like this, so I figured it's better to ask for recommendations.

Doesn't double clicking on it open it? I thought Mac had system level zip expansion.

I’ve never used a program to unzip something on a Mac. Can you not just drag it onto the desktop and double click it to unzip?

Does 7Zip work on Mac? Been using it on PC for a decade or more. Totally free. Just checked, seems not, although this is free and uses the 7zip algorithms: www.kekaosx.com/en/

If you can't open it with a double click, then the file is corrupt.

I get zip files every day. Never a problem. Do as everyone above mentioned. Double click. Done.

I get a prompt that tries to send me to WinZip to pay $29 for their program. I would think a Mac had a way to open files, but it's not working for me. Maybe I need to dump the WinZip app from my applications folder?
I dragged the WinZip app into my trash and deleted it, but I still get the prompt to buy it when I try to open the file. I tried opening with a different app Archive utility, and got this:

Right click+open with....+ Archive Urility
While you're there, select "always open with..." check box if it's presented.

Thanks Popmann, I tried that, and then clicked on the mac zip which created an aaxplugin, so clicked on that, and got the Pro Tools notice above. I only have Logic.

I think popmann is right. Control Click on it for info.. Where it says "Open with" make sure it's set to "Archive Utility."

I think the problem may be the file is AAX, not AU.

Yeah, come to think of it - I alway use AU.

Those are audio plug in files--not compressed archives. you won't be able to directly "open" those anyway. You need to put them in the default folder.....and making the plug in (code) available to your DAW.

Thanks popmann, but I don't know what or where the "default" folder is.

I managed to put the file in my components folder, but I didn't do any kind of standard installation. It's a beta test of plug-in from a friend. I just emailed asking for help installing..
The Win Zip issue is a different problem. It's a malware thing that's difficult to remove.

+1 This, btw.... is the one that works with some of the latest IK Multimedia libraries on Sierra.

If you can't open it with a double click, then the file is corrupt. Not always true. As mentioned in another post I just made, Keka is needed to open some of the libraries from IK Multimedia in Sierra-- they claim the built-in file compression in Sierra has problems. And I tried several, and Keka worked when others failed.

Thanks guys, I got the plug-in installed, the designer sent me a proper file. I still need to eradicate WinZip from my computer, but malware is hard to delete sometimes.
I'll look at keka, thanks guys.

Thanks Joseph, I tried that, and I'm clean. So I guess WinZip isn't considered malware, but it sure works like it.

Thanks Joseph, I tried that, and I'm clean. So I guess WinZip isn't considered malware, but it sure works like it. Yeah it's not, despite nag screen. But there is malware that passes itself off as WinZip. You should be able to simply remove the app then. I agree with others that Keka is definitely the best archive app that I've used. It works with no fuss on many types of archives that sometimes give other programs problems.
