Interesting mod to mkii sa-4ks:
"Today we have completed this amazing mod to the SA4000, we shall call it the SA4000+. This modification adds two Carnhill output transformers together with an class AB output buffer to the signal which widens the frequency response, reduces THD, fattens the audio and improves the 3D image of any Stereo Bus Compressor. The standard prize for this mod is 300 dollars, however, for all those who ordered this batch of the SA4000 it will be offered at only 250.00. We will include a toggle switch on the faceplate for customers to use their SA4000 in the standard way (as the original) or on this improved way. I will try to upload a mix soon with the mod engaged or disengaged so you can evaluate weather you want this feature or not on the next batch. For those who would like this mod and are waiting for the current batch of the SA4000 please contact me at stamaudio@gmail.com so we can add you the list, we can only do it for a limited ammount of units as it is extremely time consuming to perform it.
I asked if he could make a diy kit and instruction for mki owners and he is thinking about it.

I have the mk i and really like it but to give it the heft of the carnhill at a flick of a switch would be pretty nice.
I put cinemag trannies in my CL7802 and that made a noticeable good difference.

Sounds like a cool mod, in fact I would like to add one of these to my rig, but I just wish someone in the states had one in stock.

looks like you have to pre-order to get the discount ? I would rather pay a little extra to get it when I order it.

Hey Guys
I am considering putting a kit together for the DIY community. It would include all components, soldered output buffer, transformers, toggle switch and a manual of instructions.
We can also ask our techs in Canada, The US and in Europe to perform it for us but it will probably be more expensive as I charge less for labour than US or European standards. Takes a good 3-4 hours to perform.

Hey Joshua - Does the new SA4000+ have a mix knob and HPF? I missed if it did...

All SA4000 have XLR's, TRS was changed per popular demand.
The + on the SA4000 stands for transformers, not MK2, this batch is still the MK1 SA4000 with the optional upgrade.
Those features could be added in a future SA4000 MK2 version but it could be a while, I am very busy with some new stuff right now which will be quite exciting!
Thanks Joshua

Sounds like a cool mod. I have a Mohog 1176 which has the Carnhill off / on option, perfect for didigitizing.

But then it's not an SSL.... !!!! I like the fat flat tight solid state thing these do... You are correct, it is not, that is why we add a toggle switch and you can use it standard mode or moded at anytime. I highly doubt anybody would like the standard better, the mod just sounds better, it's an improved version and although audio is subjective measurements do not lie. Here are some numbers: SA4000 vs SA4000+ A) Noise (R/B): SA4000 -87dbu SA4000+ -89dbu B) Frequency Response: SA4000 17Hz to 24KHz @ +4dbu SA4000+ 8Hz to 24KHz @ +4dbu C)Headroom before clipping: SA4000 Headroom > +26dbu @1khz SA4000+ Headroom > +28dbu @1khz D) THD+N: SA4000 10Hz to 20KHz < 0,01% ----------> 0,008% with 50KHz Filter Output SA4000+ 10Hz to 20KHz < 0,009% ----------> 0,006% with 50KHz Filter Output E) CMR (Common Mode Rejection) differential output: SA4000 ≥70 db @ 0db (+4dbu) SA4000+ ≥85 db @ 0db (+4dbu)

So if the unit is rack mounted, you have to go behind the rack to flip the switch? ?

Hey Joshua - Does the new SA4000+ have a mix knob and HPF? I missed if it did... If you use in logic the IO plug in you already have the paralell compression mix knob with delay compensation.

You or a good tech can add output transformers to any transformer-less piece of outboard gear. And even add a switch between the two.
