Saw this locally recapped and im good shape. I'm checking it out on Tuesday.
I've never played one of these but I think I heard they inspired the Benson amps which I love and can't afford. So aside from "it's very heavy" what are the thoughts here?
(This would be a studio amp, portability not an issue.)

pretty sure I recorded one of these last year (I think it's the same model), and as you mentioned it gets dirty pretty quick. probably some different preamp tubes could change that breakup point (if you wanted). it sounded good, but as guitar players like to turn up as their ears get "broken-in", I thought it got a little too dirty for the particular recording, but it was too late. So probably would work well for re-amping, where you always have control of the levels going in and out.

I wouldn't even trust myself tracking on this if I was playing for a period of time for the exact reasons you said. That volume knob goes really suddenly from "clean and chimey" to "nice and grimey" on this thing. Great if you want that, but not so great if it just creeps in take after take. I think I am going to research some different preamp tubes. The grit sounds good but I've got plenty of other ways to do that (Silvertone Twin Twelve being my favorite). But the clean tone is better than anything else I personally own and I'd love more clean headroom. |

maybe 12AT7 or 5751's instead of the 12AX7's that are in there

maybe 12AT7 or 5751's instead of the 12AX7's that are in there Good suggestion. I'm gonna sit with it for now and see. I'm going to be using this for parallel effects / dirtbox tones as well so maybe the lower headroom will prove useful? |

That’s a modern neodymium speaker? You might love it, but you might also end up preferring something more classic. Hard to say without hearing it.
