Some things would have to be compromised (heat, layout, parts selection, etc.) to fit into smaller enclosures. I'm happy with the WT72's. Keepers for sure.
Im generally more interested in the way my gear sounds than looks, though the WT-72 does look really sharp. Regardless, its doubtful a more esoteric schematic and pre design like this would fit in a 1U. Its an amazing pre thats worth the extra 2" of rack space.
i understand. i prefer a bit of both due to portability and having compact stuff since im slowly building my home studio. stam upcoming v72/76 unit is 1u, i just didnt pull the plug cause its priced more than WT72, never heard of the brand before. went to their site, looks solid. for the price i cant complain.

WT is Eric's lower priced alternatives into the current market. His main brand - Locomotive - is highly praised and the best you can buy.
I prefer 2U preamps, EQs and Comps for just about everything. I like being able to SEE what I'm working with, but like @jacobmerritt said, sound is the most important determining factor by a huge margin

Anyone try the WT72 next to something more expensive like the Tab Funkenwerk V78M, Mercury V72, or an original? I have the Tab, which is awesome, but the price of these guys is pretty great. So I’m curious.
I haven't, but I'm using it for vocals on a punk record right now and it's sounding great.
Flea47 > WT-72 > slamming compression (20dB in spots) on the Weight Tank Comp.
Wow, you 1-2RU guys will never even consider owning any vintage gear then I guess. So many of the classic tone transformers won’t even fit into 2RU, 3 would be minimum.
I’ve got two Coil CA70’s, a Retro Powerstrip, an E&C stereo Ampex 601, an Altec 1567, and another Ampex 601 ready to be refurbished. Someone talk me out of getting one these WT72’s. Please!

Talk you into it. You need the weight Tank Comp too.
Last night... Vocals were, Flea47 > WT-72 > WT-Comp > Iron Age EQ. Ooohhh la la. Spicy.

Agreed. Can't see why anyone would talk you OUT of it.... <<thumbsup>>
You guys were supposed to tell me I’ve got too many tube preamps!
You didn't talk me out of buying a pair of CA70S's last week so......
Turnabout is fair play.
Seriously, I think you'll find the WT72's quite different than the Coils. At least I'm expecting that when I get the coils later this week. Time will tell. The WT's are very transparent and euphonic. I'm expecting the Coils to be weighty, dark and gnarly sounding when driven. Am I right?

The CA70’s sound great but can be hard to describe. It’s like “punchy” and “smooth” at the same time. The negative feedback control is really useful. I wouldn’t call them dark unless you increase the negative feedback. I used them last session on overheads with some M160’s and was really happy with the results.
My justification for the WT72 is that it would probably be good on bass during live tracking while the Coil’s are living on drums, Retro in vocals, and Ampex on guitar.

I like 5-8RU gear myself.
Ditto! We get that rackspace is definitely a concern, but many times 2U and 3U just makes way more sense for technical reasons (heat dissipation, room inside the case for circuitry to have ample room for lowest noise specs, etc) and as you mentioned, just like us, many of the transformers we use would be a TIGHTTT FIT in a 1RU chassis.
To each their own! Just please don't let size of certain pieces of gear dissuade you from at least checking it out
