Wow, that's pretty cheap, isn't it?
People gush about 1081s, though I know much of that has to do with the EQ.

You know I'm not seeing the ba338 and ba340 which I'm guessing they integrated it into the entire circuit somehow. Yeah what dudes usually gush over is the entire circuit which is highly complex. I actually designed a 1081 mic pre since I have some ba338s and ba340s but never got around to making pcb's.

Is the 1081 the one that's not class A? (Not that that's a problem, 31104s aren't, and they're awesome.)

Dunno, I haven't paid attention to Neve stuff in a long time. There are many more well-qualified Neve cops out there.

I built a pair of 1084EQs (which I LOVE with all their inductor sparkle - but didn't spring for Marconi knobs). These preamps might be a nice front end for the EQs. I've built other Colin kits (Audio Maintenance) and they have been first class. These new 1081 Preamps might be a good fit for the EQs. Attachments:

I saw A/B. It's bought. No questions asked.

Wow, that's pretty cheap, isn't it? People gush about 1081s, though I know much of that has to do with the EQ. The Neve Class A/B pre's tend to be a little more present than the Class A's. The 1081 Class A/B channel modules have a bigger output transformer than the broadcast 5x Series Class A/B (33114/33115) pres which are substantially smaller and narrower. But yes, the predominate reason for wanting a 1081 is the EQ.

Anybody interested in a group buy? Not sure it would work, but we could ask?

I would be. One thing to watch for John, import duties. Every time I've ordered from AML, I never get hit with customs duties. But if you do a large order, you might very well get tagged. Just a thought. I'd be in for a couple pre-built ones.

True, Bill...I was thinking about the pre-built...But, after mulling, I think I'm going to pass on grabbing one.

I just looked at the schematic (the coloring book is thorough) and as expected the professionalism at AML is nothing short of incredible. Its a really well done model of the 1081 thats for sure. Like i thought instead of using the ba338 and ba340 amp cards (kind of like DOA's)the amps are built into the entire circuit. No matter what i am sure it would sound great. I haven't spent a ton of time looking at it AML's schematic but i had a hard time sourcing several of the transistors when I built the ba338 and 340 amps. Like really hard Someday I will build a 1081 preamp as well but this is certainly cool.

You need to stay under $600 with shipping and insurance to not incur import fees. Just an FYI. Ask winetree about the new laws.

Been reading up on these. The 1073 and 1084 are preferable all round for vocals and guitars because of the classic sound. Whilst the 1081 is preferred on drums and percussion because of the better transient response and more open sound.

A 1081 without EQ is like eating pizza without mozzarella!
