a good new marketing move with a decent selection of “free” plug ins., or if you own them all a $100 coupon!

It would be cooler if they offered you any plug-in you want. After all, it costs them little to do so and they'd gain even more customer loyalty. A $100 coupon for a $299 plug-in still means I'd have to scrape up $200, and lately I'd rather put that toward a new mic or compressor.

Hey - if you all could buy something and put me as a reference that would be awesome. Lol

Lame. “Hey talented producers/engineers, do a bunch of direct marketing for us, and leverage your position of respect and trust against your friends and colleagues. Then we’ll still make you pay for something it costs us zero to make infinite supply of...”
Lame.

There’s no free lunch! Yeah, UA. No free lunch from us! (Is that what you meant?) 😉

No, actually the opposite, didn’t really get all the negativity around free plug ins or cash vouchers? Complaints about UA’s retail prices are pretty typical and here is an opportunity to pay nothing and get some very good plug ins: where’s the problem? UA makes good products, what professional isn’t already using them or aware of UA? I would think almost none ?

Lame. “Hey talented producers/engineers, do a bunch of direct marketing for us, and leverage your position of respect and trust against your friends and colleagues. Then we’ll still make you pay for something it costs us zero to make infinite supply of...” Lame. Well they have to pay the salaries of the folks that work there and to keep cranking out new plugins. My brother in law once had this idea in his mind that all music should be free, he said that it's insane that he can go to any library in the country and check out a book and read it for nothing, why can't he listen to a song the same way. He looked completely stunned when I told him in some way that book had to be purchased for the libraries, it most likely wasn't simply given to them. So if he wanted to be able to sit and listen to a song over and over again the simple thing was to pay $1.29 for it and he could just sit and listen how much and often as he'd like. Eventually UA will have to go into the subscription model. They are already doing what Digidesign did by making people overpay for their hardware just to have access. Pretty soon UA, to survive this kind of climate, will have to both allow their plugins to be used off the Sharc system and go to a subscription setup. You can equate all this to how record companies decided to allow individual purchase of a song and eventually the streaming of a song. Something was better than nothing. They made it just hard enough for folks that were not determined enough to spend a lot of time and energy finding a way to get pirated music, so the single track download and streaming at least puts something in someones pocket, but boy that's one massive subject that you can find all over this site.

How many of know someone into audio that isn’t into UAD who has the cash to buy into the platform? The limited selection or $100 off isn’t a huge motivator. I’m still debating how many more plugins I could really need or want. At least with UAD we get official versions of studio legends. Maybe once a year or every other year I’d get a bundle if the new plugins were amazing to me. Or I could get something cheap during a sale like Cooper Time Cube.

That's the deal, the twice yearly sale thing used to be a better value, especially the holiday one. With a coupon I've actually picked up a free one here and there over the years during those times and it's when most of the arsenal is built if you're on the platform, IMO. Kind of a dumb promotion. Like has been mentioned, tie this meh with Waves perpetual sale and the reality is people have a threshold with the currently saturated market. I may be "retarded" for paying $500-600 for a DI but I've got a threshold feeling for plugin prices these days. Not a bash on UAD as I'm fully vested in the platform, just some two cents on this "friends" deal.

The bonus for me with UAD is that I know I’m getting a top level emulation and I can use it on the satellite instead of my computer. The Octo gives me enough so that I can run several 480s and 1176s, Precision Delay(still an elite delay), another verb like a 224 or RMX, and then if I want to add a preamp or Distressor I can do that too. It’s more than enough processing for fx and busses. But forget about putting a lot on individual tracks unless it’s the efficient stuff. One of these days I’ll get the Cambridge maybe.

I’m certainly not asking for anything for free from UA. I just think it’s weak that they are asking their paying clients to do their marketing for them - for not much in return, at no cost whatsoever to them. In fact they are giving you the “opportunity” to buy some more plugins for your marketing services.
It feels like they must talk about us in some pretty disparaging terms at marketing meetings!

For sure, I get that. Again, not bashing, just observing. I have two Octo's and one Quad. Formerly owned a silver and blackface Apollo. Still fully vested for the offloading at minimum.

I skipped the last big sale

I stopped buying UA plugins.
I have considered doing another "big push" by purchasing a used Octo, and one of the 3+1 deals or something, but that would be a really expensive purchase I would have to plan for.
The sale prices have dried up a bit. SHARCs are just as slow as they have ever been. I'm at a sort of stale mate with the UA plugin store.

As many Apollo systems as I've sold people, they should send me a whole system.

I would feel extremely creepy if I were to ask a good friend to "buy a UAD plugin and put my name on it"
Nope. Just no.
