SSL bus clone, some decent 1176, something with a tube in it
"something with a tube in it" is a type I've never owned yet so I have to be vague. I'd probably be looking at the affordable modern mid-end stuff people are mentioning

Stereo Pye, Gates SA-39, BA-6a Very nice, but what if you could only choose three that are currently in production? Spectra-Sonics 610, Daking FET III, ADR Compex.
Yes, I know that's two stereo comps. But that's about it. I can't really see getting by with only 3 compressors - I currently have 16 working channels of hardware compression, although I seldom apply any of them very heavily they're all in use while doing a mix. Sadly, I do not currently own a Compex, although I do have 4 channels of assorted ADR Scamp compression.
FWIW, many of my compressors are old and quite a few are a bit "off beat" by modern standards. Is anyone else here still using Allison Research Gain Brains?

I have four Allison Gain Brains. Nothing else does that.

I would probably go:
Summit Audio TLA-100A: Not a big “Tone” unit but it always works. I’m thinking of adding a second one.
Serpent Audio Splice: 1176 variant is good to have, and this one is super flexible.
Neve 33609: For a stereo unit

What do the Gain Brains bring to the table?
Friend of a friend had/has a few but I haven’t been in his place in probably 25 years.
Cheers, Geoff

John, could you tell us a bit about the Spectra-Sonics? I don’t know anything about these, but I see they are available under that name. Dunno how close to the originals, who owns the name now etc.. Cheers, Geoff

Cheers, Geoff The most obvious stand out signature in my mind is a certain ‘70’s kick drum sound I’ve never heard in another comp. I don’t know what John likes his for, but mine usually end up on drums if it’s the appropriate sound. Oh, they also do the first QOTSA record OH sound.

Cheers, Geoff It's the original company, or at least the original people. It's a very, very fast FET comp (when you need it to be.) Mine is an original, not a reissue, but I'm told the reissues are the same thing. It can also be very transparent - you can't hear it work unless you want to set it up that way. They use their own opamp and their own gain cell. I got mine through an old friend who now works for the audio department at UC Berkeley. Mine really needs to be sent in for meter recalibration, but it works great just tuning it by ear so I've procrastinated. It's really an amazing compressor.

I'd get three Distressors! I’m surprised by your answer, Bob! I thought you were an LA3A kinda guy. Lucas Mr Dreamsambas, as I am reading this thread, I have that Jorge Ben album in your avatar playing on my stereo. scrolling the thread it was quite a shock to see the cover.

I totally forgot about that one for some reason. I’ve also only used vintage units, but it’s got to be the only comp I’ve used that does the dirty thing and the super transparent thing equally as good as the other. Wish I was around when they were going for pennies on the dollar!

Really nice combo.

(Big thanks to Doug @emmr ) ...That & the Samar mf65 are two big favorites here. Yet again thanks to emmr! They both still hold up well.
